| How fast does sea level rise once glaciers start retreating during a ...
Sea level rise averaged 1 meter (3.3 feet) per century after the last glacial maximum. There are over 100 sq km of land in Fraser Delta that are less than 1 meter above sea level. It is some of the highest priced land in BC, heavily built up for homes, industry, and commercial buildings. Once it started it didn't stop until sea level had risen by 180 to 200 meters (600 to 660 feet). During the 'melt water surge' Sea Level rise averaged 4 meters per century, for 500 years. That gives over 9 feet in a 70 year lifetime. Water St. in St. John's was settled in the early 1500s. At 4 meters/century it would be 20 meters underwater by now. We are at the tipping point for avoiding catastrophic climate change. Deniers who claim sea level couldn't rise by 20 feet simply don't know what they are talking about, but that is an old story by now.

Banc of America Securities analyst Craig Scott credited Apple's introduction of its Leopard operating system for strong sales of Mac computers, and raised his earnings expectations for Apple. Noting concern for tech overall because of recent economic trends, Scott said, "While none of our names are immune from economic changes, we believe that Apple is less likely to be impacted by such changes due to the company's unique and diversified business model, loyal customer base, and market share gains." On the downside, shares of Opnext Inc. continued to sink after a 36.5 percent decline in Friday's trading, after the Eatontown, N.J., company lowered its sales guidance for its fiscal third quarter, citing lowered demand. That announcement generated a host of negative comments from analysts, including a downgraded from Needham & Co.
Dell Buys the SaaS Platform Salesforce.com Wishes it Had
But if you're tracking software as a service, and in particular Salesforce.com's attempts at building a third party platform for SaaS applications, you might want to take a closer look at the Dell/Everdream deal. Because hiding in plain site in the Everdream business model is a successful SaaS platform that has become a place to do real business – as in revenue-generating sales – for third party software companies. We're not just talking about the SaaS and CRM start-ups that seem to be the norm inside the Saleforce.com SaaS partner ecosystem, or their largely revenue-free efforts thus far: Everdream has attracted the likes of Symantec, MacAfee, Iron Mountain, WebEx, and a little company called Computer Associates, among others. And just to be clear, while Everdream wouldn't give me any numbers, “our CFO writes a check to these companies every month", the folks at Everdream told me.

A look at Microsoft's new business division leader
But those who have worked for him say Elop, 44, is a no-nonsense, hardworking sales executive who helped take Flash maker Macromedia Inc. to new heights during the dot-com boom and, as short-term CEO during the subsequent downturn, helped the company survive by engineering its acquisition by rival Adobe Systems Inc. "His nickname was 'The General,' " said Chris Swenson, a software analyst at NPD Group Inc., who was an employee at Macromedia during Elop's tenure. With his military-style flat-top haircut, Elop stuck out among the "young, green-haired and pierced employees" at the San Francisco company, Swenson said. "He's the kind of guy who probably gets heavy starch on his dress shirts." Even so, employees seemed to respect him. "He seems very, very bright and down to earth," he said.
