MARKET SNAPSHOT: U.S. Stocks To Extend Fall Next Week; Financials In ...

The market's attention is poised to stay trained on the financial sector after the group suffered its worst week in years as Merrill Lynch & Co.'s (MER) chief executive was forced out and Citigroup's (C) board prepared to decide whether to accept the resignation of CEO Chuck Prince as well.

'The market is obsessed with these credit problems. People feel like they're standing in a mine field and they don't know where all the mines are,' said Brian Gendreau, investment strategist at ING Investment Management. 'We're looking for an opportunity to go back into equities. I just don't think next week is going to be the time. There's still just too much uncertainty.'

The unraveling of the subprime mortgage crisis on Wall Street shook the financial services sector and much of the stock market during the past week, with uncertainty about the extent of losses in the collateralized debt obligations business locking up many of the global credit and derivatives markets.

Rogers could be released on bail

New evidence of Sweet's possible existence came to light in early December, though, when a $5,000 Rolex watch owned by Park was found in the possession of Philipsburg resident Ronnie Starr, who was charged Nov. 8 with receiving stolen property, according to court documents.

The motion for bail, filed Jan. 2, came after Rogers's attorneys filed a petition in late December asking that the case be remanded back to Centre County Court. Centre County Chief Public Defender David Crowley said that although the appeal is likely to be granted, the state Superior Court could delay up to a year in entertaining the petition.

"[Rogers] shouldn't have to sit in jail for up to a year," he said.

Starr told police he bought the watch from a man he met in a bar, whom he remembered being called "B," according to a criminal complaint.

These halls have witnessed Virginians of every city and county, men and women, people of all races, from all walks of life, rise to the challenge of self-government.

As we see other nations in turmoil, suffering violence over claims of leadership and authority, we are reminded what a privilege it is to hold an election, pass power from one president to another, one governor to another, one legislator to another—peacefully, and with the conviction that whatever party or region our leadership hails from, they serve us all.

This accomplishment cannot be taken for granted. It has been paid for in blood, and even today, Virginians serve in places of great danger, helping to preserve the civil society we enjoy and advance freedom in other lands.

Here at home, our society is not held together by force, or by fear, but by the continued consent of our citizens to engage in this common effort.

You and I have a responsibility to the citizens we serve, to bring our knowledge and experiences, our best ideas, our vision for Virginia’s future, to the public debate. We should speak boldly for what we believe, and not hesitate to defend our principles. We should give voice to those who cannot be heard.

Firefox a Growing Target for Hackers

While the Firefox browser has generally been considered a more secure alternative to Microsoft's Internet Explorer, its increased market share and corporate deployment have finally made it a worthwhile target for malware authors. Users are advised to start treating Firefox with the same level of security preparedness they used to reserve only for IE.

Hewlett-Packard wins for the 2nd time

HP has developed and patented home-grown software tools that use "sophisticated statistical techniques that look at demand patterns over time cyclically and industry capacity" and predict what demand and HP's material requirement will be, says Conrad.

"With high statistical confidence we are able to commit very stable demand profiles to certain suppliers," he says. HP uses the tools to forecast demand for memory, motherboards, optical drives, liquid crystal displays and batteries. Suppliers are given six months to a yearlong view into HP demand.

"This enables suppliers to get their material pipelines in place, to size their factories to mitigate some of the volatility in demand," says Conrad. "As a result we get a supply guarantee and sometimes price concessions."

Using PRM HP can commit, with confidence, to purchase a certain amount of material at a certain price.

HP, MS Aim to Tidy Up Digital Clutter With New Home Server

Homes bursting with digital data will be the prime targets of Microsoft and HP when the duo's MediaSmart Server running Windows Home Server ships later this month. The device is designed to present users with a relatively easy way to share, organize and back up their personal media data. The word "server" in the name, however, may be a turn-off to consumers with less tech know-how.
