L-3 adding wing facility in Waco

It will be used to structurally refurbish wings for P-3 Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance aircraft. The company currently refurbishes P-3 aircraft for the U.S. Navy, the Department of Homeland Security and international customers.

The wing facility will initially employ approximately 40 employees, with that number expected to reach more than 80 by the end of 2008 and growing to approximately 100 at peak capacity, including all mechanics and support personnel. The company is accepting applications for experienced sheet metal installers and mechanical installers via its Web site, www.L-3Waco.com.

The new facility is located at 1555 Old Hewitt Drive in Waco. It will be used to refurbish multiple sets of wings that have been removed from aircraft. The wings will be transported by truck between L-3's facility at Waco's Texas State Technical College Airport and the wing facility.

The Other Women to Watch

The San Jose, Calif., company has branched into online payments, Web ticketing services, comparison shopping and Internet phone calls as its growth has slowed.

The gambles to diversify the company's business have come at a cost, though. Ebay took a $1.4 billion write-down in October for the 2005 acquisition of Internet-calling firm Skype, which eBay bought for $2.6 billion. The deal failed to meet expectations. Ms. Whitman has acknowledged she was "disappointed" by Skype's performance, but she says the service has outdistanced competitors, making it stronger.

She's also leading an overhaul of eBay's flagship auction marketplace, including improved search features introduced this year, to revive growth prospects.

"I'm very optimistic," she said in another recent interview.

Software cracking tools open the door to malware

Some of the most prevalent "hacking tools" are those which users unwittingly install themselves, according to stats from anti-virus firm Trend Micro.

Trend Micro warns that, for example, key generator programs designed to unlawfully activate Nero CD burning software from a trial mode into a paid mode are often packaged with a range of malware.

"What you see here is our first alpha release," says a greeting on the Wikia Search site. "We are aware that the quality of the search results is low. Of course, before we start, we have no user feedback data. So the results are pretty bad. But we expect them to improve rapidly in coming weeks, so please bookmark the site and return often."

Is it your testimony, sir, that Jeremy Frazier in that time period never operated that vehicle," prosecutor Robert Welsh asked Frazier."That is in fact my testimony," Frazier said.Cross examining Frazier, George asked if he had worked as a police officer in Truro. Frazier said he was a dispatcher and police officer for "approximately two years" and a full-time patrolman for "little over a year" before starting his business in 1990.Frazier said he began operating his business out of Wellfleet in 1993 and one of three bays he rents at the site was rented in 2002 to his brother, Michael Frazier, Jeremy's brother, and owner of a landscaping business. His brother kept a dump truck, pickup, Bobcat, trailer and other equipment in the rented bay in 2002, Frazier said. Asked the color of the dump truck and pickup, Frazier said both were black.Frazier said he was also driving a pickup in 2002, a 1996 Ford F250 with a black cab and a "very bright blue" body on the back with multiple doors, a style of truck often used by electricians.Any one of your trucks, George asked, "had no business, meaning professional business, up in the area of 40 Depot Road on Jan.

SHLACHTER, PEROTIN, FUQUAY & CO.

Sometimes, American entrepreneurs see opportunities ripe for the plucking in less-developed places, only to find out why doing business in alien cultures can involve monumental challenges never taught in business school.

Slone has had uncanny timing. (Notice we didn't say luck.)

After the 65-year-old chief executive of Touchstone Communications opened a call center in the heart of Islamabad, the Pakistani capital, he happened to be visiting when the South Asian country was struck by a devastating earthquake, when the prime minister resigned and when President Pervez Musharraf declared emergency rule.

And Slone returned to Islamabad on Dec. 27, the day opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in Rawalpindi, about 15 miles away.

Needless to say, his several hundred call center employees were unable to show up because of night curfews -- they start work about 7 p.m.
