The Search Party

In 2004, Google went public, selling its stock at an opening price of eighty-five dollars per share. Page and Brin, each of whom owned about fifteen per cent of the company, became billionaires; so did Schmidt, who owned about six per cent. Google's stock has at times climbed over seven hundred dollars a share, and a great many Google employees have become fabulously wealthy.

In 2005, Google, outbidding Microsoft, paid a billion dollars for a five-per-cent stake in AOL and a five-year contract to deliver all AOL searches and search-based advertising. But it was the intended purchase of DoubleClick, a company that specializes in display and banner ads and video advertising, that unnerved many in the advertising industry. Microsoft, joined by A.T.&T., claimed that the combination of DoubleClick and Google would be “anti-competitive," and pressed the Federal Trade Commission to block the merger.

Wednesday smorgasbord: food section highlights

It's the last Wednesday before Christmas, and food sections nationwide are getting in the spirit with holiday recipes and year-end roundups. The Globe is no exception.

Check out T. Susan Chang's annual cookbook roundup, an excellent source of gift ideas for the cooks in your life (or yourself). Here in the office, we're all intrigued by Cecilia Chang's "The Seventh Daughter," a memoir/Chinese cookbook.

Today's section also features a story by Darry Madden about roasting geese. Martha Stone, chef and owner of Martha's Stone Soup at the Tavern in Plymouth, shares her method. Turns out it's not that hard. Story here, recipe here.

In The New York Times, Mark Bittman offers suggestions for "101 Simple Appetizers in 20 Minutes or Less." Take note, holiday party hosts.

He holds the Hilda and Douglas Bourne Chair of Chemical Engineering and a George Lynn Cross Research Professorship at OU. "We are the only one in the world that can make this particular semiconducting type (of nanotechnology)," said Resaco, now the chief scientist for the Norman company. SouthWest NanoTechnologies is expected to scale up its production of the nanotubes next spring when it opens a new 15,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in the Norman Business Park. The building will house two new reactors that will enable the company to produce one kilogram — roughly two pounds — of nanotubes per day. Demand is growing for its products, Resasco said. The company has deals to produce nanotubes for leading companies in electronics and advanced materials, although no names are mentioned because of confidentiality agreements.
