Maybe pompous L.A.Times media critic Tim Rutten had a point about those "gossip sheets, whether online or on slick paper, that continue to proliferate like informational vermin." The Pulitzer-winning Times would never . ... Hello? What? Really? The bogus Becks vibrator story didn't appear in Luke Ford's blog at all? It appeared ...well, here. ... P.S.: And it hasn't been corrected. ... [via Steve Smith] 1:15 A.M. Wednesday, July 11, 2007 According to L.A. Observed, Mayor Villaraigosa appears to have drawn a line around Mirthala Salinas and put his credibility, if not his career, on it: At today's photo op du jour, he flatly denied that there have been any other women in his recent past — "a definitive, absolute no." The mayor's language is echoed in this local ABC TV report.

ITV programmes named and shamed
The Jiggy Bank competition featured a contestant chosen to ride a giant mechanical pig. Each week the pig visited a difference location. But each week the production team drew up a shortlist of 20-30 entrants who lived within an hour of the location, meaning entrants from other areas of the country had no chance of winning. The production team then routinely used "editorial judgment" to select the winning contestant. A final shortlist of five was then drawn up and all were visited by a researcher who then selected the eventual winner. The terms and the conditions of the competition said that the winner was chosen at random. The review also found that the production team used "editorial and geographic discretion" to select winners for the Grab The Ads section of the show.
Indulging A Taste For Diners
A few miles away at the edge of the airport and across the road from Wal-Mart is the Aero Diner, a lovingly restored rectangular structure from the late 1950s with a gleaming steel skin and large picture windows that angle outward. Once known as East Hartford's Boulevard Diner, it was moved to Southbury and then to Windham, where it was the South Windham Diner until 1995, arriving at its current site in 2005. Unfortunately, not all diners are so successfully recycled: Skee's, which dates from the 1920s, has sat sadly vacant and deteriorating for years on its busy Main Street corner in Torrington. Garbin speculates that it's "the oldest viable diner in the country." I remember a Fathers' Day breakfast in the tiny barrel-roof eatery when my kids were small. How I long to be there again, gazing out the etched glass windows, admiring the dark woodwork, the marble countertop and elaborate ceramic tile as I fork pancakes off my plate.

Are Designers The Enemy Of Design?
There are mountains of computers and iPods and cell phones and stuff—your old stuff—building up in India and Chinas, leaking toxic chemicals. Greenpeace has launched a Green My Apple campaign. Europe tipped green in the 90s. The U.S. tipped green just last year. I actually think that of all the designers in the US design professions, architects are the greenest. Architects are the leaders in terms of sustainability. Building according to LEED specs is the norm for big corporations. Bank of America is putting up an incredibly green building near Bryant Park. One wonderful green trick— it uses cheap electricity at night to make ice in the basement to cool the skyscraper in the morning. Bring back the ice box. The broad new paradigm for design—the paradigm you will all work within for the rest of your lives—is sustainability.
