Why is this anecdote-laden style so popular with business authors, and so successful (to the tune of best-selling books and huge speaking fees)? I think it comes down to two things: 1) Fascinating anecdotes can, just by themselves, make you feel like you've really learned something. ("Hey, now I know what an Apgar score is, and where it came from! Who cares if this knowledge has zero application to my business?") 2) A skillful anecdote-wielder can trick us into thinking the anecdote is prescriptive. In fact, what's being sold is success by association. It's no coincidence that The Big Moo talks about the iPod—a recent mega-hit we're all familiar with—in at least three chapters. It's tempting to believe that bite-sized anecdotes about how the iPod was conceived, or designed, or marketed will reveal the secret formula for kicking butt with our own projects.
Events center inches toward city's control
They watched the Cheyenne City Council's Finance Committee eventually vote 2-1 to recommend approval to swap 13.79 acres of city land appraised at $3.035 million for the Taco John's Events Center. An appraiser said in 2005 that the center is valued at $6.8 million. The private investors who built the facility in 2000 are selling the center at a loss; the city would get it for pennies on the dollar. But the city would not have to pay cash for the center, using surplus land instead. If approved at a noon meeting Thursday by the full council, the city would take the center over Jan. 1.Staffers say the city could recover most of its expenses to run the facility without the water bills, property taxes and management fees the private company pays now."It would be great if it worked," local resident Christopher Brown said.

Video iPod jumpstarts PMP market
Even though Apple's video-capable iPod technically does not fit the definition of a true Portable Media Player (PMP), it has given the product class a boost, reports high-tech market research firm In-Stat. According to the research company, the worldwide market for true, video-centric PMPs will grow to 5 million units by the end of 2006, up from a mere 390,000 just two years ago. "Despite the fact that PMP shipments are finally gaining traction, suppliers and manufacturers continue to face challenges," commented Stephanie Ethier, In-Stat analyst. "PMPs will continue to compete with other portable devices offering similar functionality, such as notebook computers, portable DVD players, handheld gaming products, and other mobile devices." Over the next year, In-Stat expects that improvements in video compression technology, download video content sites, and wireless communications will help drive the PMP market.

If you're LSU, you're allowed to flub two auditions as No. 1 and still have people say, "That team deserves another chance." We've known for years that the BCS is a sham of an arrangement. (To call it a "system" confers far too much dignity.) What we didn't grasp until Sunday was that the BCS is devoid of rules, devoid of reason, devoid even of common courtesy. Georgia got jumped without losing a game or even playing one. LSU was hoisted above the Bulldogs on the dubious strength of a seven-point victory in a game it was favored to win by 7 1/2 points. Georgia was No. 4 in the BCS standings last week — LSU was No. 7 — and two of the top three teams lost. Simple math should have put the Bulldogs in the title game. Turns out the BCS flunked math as well as logic.

If I remember correctly, I watched an interview with Bill Gates and he said there would be annual updates to IE). As much as I am a loyal user, I note that more and more websites are no longer using IE hacks, and the experience is degrading to the IE-user.. Security is important, but not everything!" Microsoft Chairman Gates did, indeed, promise quicker browser updates going forward. He suggested at one point that Microsoft would provide new IE releases every 9 to 12 months. With IE 8 seemingly not in any kind of external beta test yet, it seems like it is going to be a lot longer than that before Microsoft it provides a new version of IE. Microsoft has said it plans to make a test version of an IE 7 refresh available to testers in December. But no one is providing any kind of due dates or feature sets for IE 8.
