BLACK MOUNTAIN MARATHON AND MOUNT MITCHELL CHALLENGE: Beginning at dawn Feb. 23 in Black Mountain marathon and challenge runners will follow trails to the top of Mount Mitchell, eastern America's highest point at 6,684-feet. The challenge is a 40-mile event. Marathon runners go to the Black Mountain Gap overlook, and then retrace their steps to the start/finish area.
