IP Innovation and Technology Licensing have filed a patent infringement suit against Red Hat and Novell. As for the people employed by the slaughter industry: The truck drivers will drive for someone else (I see LOTS of trucks going down the road with “now hiring drivers" signs on them). The plant employees quit these places on a frequent basis anyway (it is a VERY high turnover industry), so they will get jobs wherever they normally would be employed. The plant owners are from Belgium (and rich), so I imagine they will go home or start up another business. The USDA inspectors will still work for the USDA. They will just go on to inspect other animal slaughter facilities. The REASON for slaughter is that people in Europe and Asia like to eat horses. That is it! They are entitled to do what their culture finds acceptable.

The San Jose, Calif., company has branched into online payments, Web ticketing services, comparison shopping and Internet phone calls as its growth has slowed. The gambles to diversify the company's business have come at a cost, though. Ebay took a $1.4 billion write-down in October for the 2005 acquisition of Internet-calling firm Skype, which eBay bought for $2.6 billion. The deal failed to meet expectations. Ms. Whitman has acknowledged she was "disappointed" by Skype's performance, but she says the service has outdistanced competitors, making it stronger. She's also leading an overhaul of eBay's flagship auction marketplace, including improved search features introduced this year, to revive growth prospects. "I'm very optimistic," she said in another recent interview.

A better question to ask is if Mark and his team have the right level of judgment that's needed to succeed, especially when it comes to understanding user privacy and advertising sensitivity. This appears to be their repeated blindspot, and they would do well to learn from their mistakes. That's the core of judgment, which is gained only through experience. For myself, I thought Zuckerberg looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights, turning in a tame performance that missed on almost all counts. But does it matter? If we are to believe Hodgkinson then it doesn't - at least not to Facebook: The creators of the site need do very little bar fiddle with the programme. In the main, they simply sit back and watch as millions of Facebook addicts voluntarily upload their ID details, photographs and lists of their favourite consumer objects.
