EU launches new probes against Microsoft

It would also mean companies could use Linux computers that ran Office rivals, he added.

ECIS also wants Microsoft to provide data so the e-mail program Outlook and the Exchange Server which works with it can run smoothly with rival products. For now, users must rely on Outlook and Exchange to collaborate on such things as organizing meetings.

Finally, ECIS wants to ensure Internet applications from Google and other companies, so-called "cloud computing," will continue to work on any operating system.

Opera <OPERA.OL> says Microsoft ensures rival Web browsers are not fully compatible with its Internet Explorer, and argues the U.S. firm should follow Internet standards which Microsoft itself helped develop. It also argues Microsoft has tied its Internet Explorer Web browser to Windows.

Northern Rock starts to repay taxpayer

The sale comes just four days before a crucial shareholder meeting at which investors hope to push through resolutions that will give them a say in the sale of any asset worth 5pc or more of the book. However, the changes would not have affected today's deal as it represents just 2pc of the book.

Northern Rock revealed that the portfolio earned net interest income of £34m in the 12 months to June but said "in view of the future funding costs under the facilities with the Bank of England, on which interest is charged at a penal rate, the future net interest income would have been significantly lower".

Equity release customers tend to be pensioners who take out a loan against their property to augment their retirement income.

There are no monthly payments but the interest accrues every year, effectively increasing the value of the loan every month.

Former Phillies pitching coach Johnny Podres dies at 75

I don't know nothin' about computers," he said. "I know pitchers."

He roamed the Phillies clubhouse, with one hand in a back pocket, a cigarette between his lips, blurting out often-incongruous questions to whomever crossed his path.

"Who won that game last night?" he'd suddenly ask a reporter.

"What time's the bus?" he might ask a clubhouse attendant or "Think it might rain?"

He was friendly with reporters but always reluctant to say too much - especially about himself.

"I don't like to talk about what I do," Podres said in '95. "All I do is my job, what I'm supposed to do. The guys pitching are the ones getting people out. They're throwing the ball. I don't get complicated. I just tell them. Make your [hip] turn.

Dr. MLK Jr. Brunch: Speaker challenges community to act

McCarroll, the pastor at First Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, was the keynote speaker for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Brunch, an annual event organized by the Murfreesboro branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

He challenged the audience to be active in making the community better instead of being apathetic.

"We experience social discontent when kids value the printed dollar more than a human life," McCarroll said.

People are discontent when they're crime victims in the parking lot at a shopping center; when a mother chooses welfare over work; when teens won't pull their pants up and curse their parents; when the community won't raise the quality of living in problem neighborhoods.

The pastor recounted King's legacy of leading a movement that began in 1955 with a bus boycott in Montgomery, Ala., by black residents upset about discrimination.
