Outmoded Gadgets Hit Landfills at 'Frightening' Pace

"The problem today is that people upgrade their mobile phones every year and only a small percentage of these phones are disposed of safely," said Johan Thomsen, a manager at Green Mobile. The situation is "frightening," he said. Green Mobile asks people to hold on to their existing phones for as long as possible and passes on the savings of not having to subsidize a new handset to the user through lower call charges.

eBay leaps onto mobile web with O2's i-mode

O2 is set to announce it has signed up auction giant eBay to its i-mode mobile internet service.

The service, which can already be accessed via i-mode enabled handsets, is thought to be receiving its official launch soon.

eBay will now be able to offer its users the chance to check their auctions on the move, with a version of the site specially optimised for use on mobile handsets, using technology developed by NTT DoCoMo in Japan.

The i-mode version of eBay provides most of the same functionality as the regular internet service, including the ability to bid, search the auction site and monitor the progress of auctions using the 'my eBay' function.

eBay users won't be able to pay for purchases on their mobiles, however auction winners will have to return to their computers to use PayPal or pay offline.

The new bubble-prone economy

Earlier, stocks in high-tech companies went through a boom and bust that helped bring on the recession of the early 2000s. Before that, a regional real- estate bubble, fueled in part by the savings-and-loan fiasco, is widely thought to have contributed to the recession of the early 1990s.

In focusing on identifying incipient bubbles and trying to prevent them, as suggested by Makin and Rivlin, the political and policy worlds will be making a substantial shift. Until now, the conventional wisdom has been that bubbles could not be identified except in hindsight and that policymakers should not try.

That view was given broad currency by former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan as an explanation for the Fed's inaction during the 1990s stock boom. After tentatively suggesting in 1996 that stock prices were exhibiting "irrational exuberance," Greenspan opposed any effort to tamp down the market, saying that productivity was growing so rapidly that many of the old reasons for concern no longer applied.

Continuing Education Despite Natural Disasters: Some San Diego Schools ...

Some San Diego Schools Forge Ahead Through the Fires with Virtual Learning

SAN DIEGO Nov. 7, 2007 -- When the wildfires broke out in San Diego County on Sunday, October 21, most schools in the county closed down. As the flames spread rapidly and the number of evacuees increased exponentially, all of the countys districts closed for the entire week. Many students, teachers and administrators did not know whether their schools would still be there when they returned. But school still went on for some through a web-based storage and file sharing service called School Web Lockers.

Fisk wants to sell its security to 'pay the rent'

The Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, referenced in the article, "Setting limits on free speech," Nov. 4, uses this right like an umbrella of protection as they parade around the country protesting military funerals.

It has been said that they have a constitutional right to do so. I'm glad to see that a jury in the U.S. District Court in Baltimore saw it differently.

Everyone has the right to express their views on the ongoing war against terrorism, but in my opinion, to protest at a funeral is about as low as it gets.

The disrespectful and derogatory signs held up by Westboro Church members have no place in sight of a grieving family. It's a disgusting spectacle to say the least.

Matthew Dolan, of The Baltimore Sun, used the adjectives "family-based, conservative and controversial" in his description of the Westboro Baptist Church.

FindEcommerceHost.com Helps Consumers Find the Right Ecommerce Hosting

There is no doubt that the Internet has changed the way people do business. Ecommerce plays a major part in the global economy and entrepreneurs and businessmen now have a choice between traditional bricks and mortar type businesses, and conducting business on the Internet. For those who choose the Ecommerce route, finding the right Web host is just as important as finding the right location for a traditional business. A new Web site launched recently, FindEcommerceHost.com, helps people find the right Ecommerce Web host to meet their budget and requirements.

There is a lot to think about when you start an Ecommerce Web site, explains FindEcommerceHost.coms Web Editor, Anne Wongsawat. You might have the product people want, but how are you going to display it on your Web site in a way that makes it easy for people to buy it? Do you use Shopping cart-type software? If so, which is best? If your site is successful, and people want to buy your products, how do they pay for them? Which payment gateway can you use? What will happen if your site becomes a small Amazon.com and receives hundreds of thousands or even millions of visitors a day? Choosing the right Ecommerce Web host can answer many of these questions.
